Hockey Defeated by Miami (Ohio) in Series Finale

Miami (Ohio) used goals from four different players to post a 4-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at the Steve "Coach" Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.

Ryan Sullivan, Raimonds Vitolins, John Waldron and Matthew Barbolini all scored for the the Redhawks (3-1-0), who out-shot Canisius by a 39-18 margin for the contest.

Senior Max Kouznetsov tallied the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (0-2-0), finding the back of the net with a power-play tally in the second period.

Sullivan opened the scoring at the 16:05 mark of the first period when he fired a shot from the left point that found its way through traffic and over the right shoulder of Canisius senior netminder David Fessenden.

Miami doubled its margin to 2-0 in the dying seconds of the opening frame. Barbolini began the sequence, creating a turnover deep in the Canisius zone and taking the puck behind the net before finding a streaking Vitolins, who rifled a shot under the blocker of Fessenden with just over two seconds showing on the clock.

Waldron stretched the Redhawks advantage to 3-0 just before the eight-minute mark of the second period with a power-play tally, sneaking a wrist shot past the right pad of Fessenden from the top of the slot

Kouznetsov got Canisius on the board with 8:28 elapsed in the second period with a power-play tally, beating Miami goaltender Logan Neaton with a shot to the glove side from the bottom of the right faceoff circle while the Griffs were on the power play to trim the deficit to 3-1.

Barbolini put the game out of reach with just under five minutes remaining in the third period when his shot on the rush ricochet off the end boards and bounced off of Fessenden's skate and into the Canisius goal, giving the home team a three-goal edge.

Nelson finished the contest with 17 saves while Fessenden turned aside 35 shots between the pipes for the Golden Griffins.
