Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Shuts Down Saint Peter’s on Senior Day, 3-0

Senior forward Luke Szablewski's game-winning goal and graduate student keeper Spencer Catalano's first career clean sheet highlighted Canisius' victory over Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon in men's collegiate soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins finished out the season with a MAAC victory, cementing their record at 2-11-5 and 1-6-3 in conference play. St. Peters closed out the 2023 campaign with a 2-8-5 overall record and 1-5-3 ledger in the MAAC.

GAME RECAP
The Griff went on the attack early on in the contest, with Szablewski scoring in the sixth minute of the match. Assisted by two key passes from freshman Edson Flores and Matthew Fischer, Szablewski buried the shot past the Peacock keeper Pedro Alves for his first goal of the season.

The Canisius defense held up well against the St. Peter's attack, with seniors Riley Wagner, Inder Thind, and freshman AJ Zarcone playing stout defense for the full 90 minutes.

The Griffs struck again moments before the end of the first half as junior Ely Sidibe's shot deflected off the keeper to the awaiting foot of freshman Mason Petrucci in the 44th minute. Petrucci's second goal of the season put the Griffs up 2-0 heading into the halftime break.

Canisius continued to control the pace in the early stages of the second half, with Szablewski getting two more shots on the Saint Peter's net. At the 59:10 mark, a Peacock penalty in the left corner of their box allowed Daniel Longo to step up for the free kick. Longo's cross into the box, intended for Szablewski, ricocheted off a diving St. Peter's defender into the net, setting the final score at 3-0.

Catalano was superb in goal for Canisius, making a trio of diving stops to secure the shutout. He ended the day with three saves against 13 shot attempts. Alves made nine saves against 22 shots attempts from the Griffs.
