Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Colgate Comes Back to Defeat Women's Basketball in Overtime

Colgate outscored Canisius by a 28-11 margin during the fourth quarter and overtime to post a 61-55 come-from-behind victory in intercollegiate women's basketball action Thursday at Cottrell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.

With the win, Colgate remained undefeated at 3-0 while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-2 on the young campaign.

Four players finished in double figures for the Raiders, with Taylor Golembiewski leading the way with 15 points. On the glass, Alexa Brodie collected eight boards while Sophia Diehl chipped in seven. As a team, Colgate shot 21-of-57 (.368) from the floor.

Sophomore Sisi Eleko led Canisius with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season with junior Athina Lexa chipped in a season-high 13 points of her own. On the glass, graduate student Bri Rozzi collected a season-best six boards and a team-leading three steals.

Down 44-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Raiders would find their form in the final frame, limiting Canisius to just one field goal while outscoring the Griffs, 16-6, to cut their deficit to just one, 50-49, off a Madison Schiller 3-pointer with 17.8 seconds to play. The Griffs would make it a two-point game off a free throw from Rozzi, but a Schiller layup with three seconds to play tied the score, 51-51, and sent the game to overtime

In the overtime session, Colgate limited Canisius to just four total points while adding in 10 of their own to complete the comeback and defeat Canisius, 61-55.

After a slow start to the game for both teams, the Griffs would take over in the final five minutes of the first quarter, keeping the Raiders off the board while adding eight points of their own, punctuated by a Lexa buzzer-beater, to take a 16-9 lead after 10 minutes.

Canisius' run continued into the second quarter as it opened with a 7-2 spurt, ignited by a Heeps 3-pointer, to go up 23-11 with 7:49 remaining in the half. The Griffs slightly outscored Colgate, 11-8, the rest of the way to enter the locker room ahead, 34-19.

Out of the break, the Raiders would begin to chip away at the Griffs lead, riding a 10-4 spurt to trim the Griffs lead just nine, 38-29, with 6:08 to play in the third.

The Griffs would end the third quarter on a high note, leaving the Raiders scoreless for the final 3:22 while adding in six points of their own to enter the fourth quarter ahead, 44-33, setting the stage for the Raiders comeback.
