Hockey Opens Homestand Tuesday with 5-1 Triumph over Robert Morris

Freshman forward Matteo Giampa scored twice and senior goaltender David Fessenden recorded 29 saves to pace Canisius in a 5-1 victory over Robert Morris in Atlantic Hockey Association action Tuesday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Junior Matt Vermaeten and seniors Cody Schiavon and David Melaragni also scored for the Golden Griffins (3-7-1, 3-3-1 AHA), who opened a four-game homestand with Tuesday's victory.

McKay Hayes accounted for the lone goal for the visiting Colonials (2-7-3, 1-5-2 AHA).

Vermaeten opened the scoring for the second consecutive contest as he backhanded a shot past the left leg of RMU netminder Chad Veltri late in the first period to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games and give the Griffs the lead.
Giampa expanded the Canisius cushion to 3-0 with a pair of tallies a little more than five minutes apart in the second period. His first came on the power play with 7:12 elapsed in the middle frame as he beat Veltri with a wrist shot to the glove side from the top of the slot to put the Griffs in front, 2-0. Giampa notched his second of the game at the 12:27 mark as he buried a rebound on a shot from fellow freshman Jack Budd to give the Griffs a three-goal cushion. Hayes got the Colonials on the board with a power-play tally just before the five-minute mark of the third, beating Fessenden from the right face-off circle to pull RMU within two.

Schiavon restored the Griffs three-goal cushion less than two minutes later, one-timing sophomore Oliver Tarr's cross-ice feed past an outstretched Veltri to make it a 4-1 contest.
Melaragni closed out the scoring at the 10:19 mark of the third, sneaking behind the RMU defense before beating Veltri five-hole to determine the final margin of victory. POSTGAME COMMENTS GAME NOTES
