Men’s Basketball Starts MAAC Play with Win Over Quinnipiac

Canisius junior Tre Dinkins scored a career-high 21 points and senior Siem Uijtendaal added a season-high 20 points to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 93-73 home win over Quinnipiac in MAAC men's basketball action Friday night at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The win moves Canisius to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play, while the Bobcats slipped to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in league action with the loss. Canisius has now defeated Quinnipiac five times in the last six meetings in the series, dating back to the 2020-21 campaign.

Dinkins and Uijtendaal are the first two Canisius players to score 20-or more points in a game this season, and the backcourt duo led five Griffs in double-figures in the victory. Junior TJ Gadsden matched a season-high with 17 points in the victory for the Blue and Gold, while junior Frank Mitchell and sophomore Youri Fritz each added 10 points, apiece. Three different Griffs had six rebounds on the night, while Dinkins and sophomore Cam Palesse each had five assists to help fuel the Canisius offense, which shot 45.8 percent from the field, 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from 3-point land and 82.4 (14-for-17) from the free-throw line for the game.

For Quinnipiac, Alexis Reyes came off the bench and scored a team-high 14 points for the Bobcats, who had their three-game win streak snapped with the loss. Paul Otieno added 12 points to the Bobcats' efforts, as the team shot 38.8 percent from the field, made just 3-of-20 shots from long range and hit on 80 percent (24-for-30) of their tosses from the free-throw line.

GAME RECAP
With less than 8:00 left to play in the first half, Canisius turned a two-point lead into a nine-point cushion thanks to an 8-1 run over the span of 2:35 that put the Griffs up 35-26 with 5:06 left before halftime. In that run, which was started by a jumper in the paint by Mitchell, Fritz scored four points and Uijtendaal capped the run with a fast-break lay-up, forcing a Quinnipiac timeout. A traditional three-point play by Dinkins moments later gave the Griffs' their first 10-point lead at 38-28 with 4:17 left in the opening half, and the home team went into the locker room up 47-33 after Canisius closed out the first 20 minutes of play by scoring seven of the final nine points of the opening stanza.

Out of the locker room to start the second half, Canisius pulled away from Quinnipiac thanks to a 13-5 run over the span of 4:15 to start the frame. In that run, five different Griffs scored at least two points. A 3-point field goal by Uijtendaal, one of his four on the night, with 12:42 left on the clock put Canisius up 30 at 73-43. Canisius closed out the game by shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from 3-point land in the second half, as the Blue and Gold's lead never dipped below 20 points at any time in the contest's final 17:21.

As a team, Canisius had a season-high 21 assists on 33-made field goals, and the team matched a season-high with 13 makes from 3-point land in the victory. The Griffs held a 44-38 advantage on the glass, with 16 of those rebounds coming off the offensive glass to help Canisius outscore Quinnipiac by a 27-7 margin in second-chance points.
