Hockey Doubled up by Niagara Friday

Four different Niagara players scored goals and goaltender Jarrett Fiske made 29 saves to power the Purple Eagles to a 4-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Carter Randklev, Cole Mickel, Lane Brockhoff and Lars Rodne all found the back of the net for the Purple Eagles (9-13-1, 7-7-1 AHA), who opened the home-and-home series between the Battle of the Bridge foes with the two-goal victory.

Sophomore Oliver Tarr and freshman Matteo Giampa accounted for the two goals for the Golden Griffins (8-13-3, 7-6-3 AHA), who out-shot Niagara by a 31-16 margin for the contest.

Randklev opened the scoring at the 15:32 mark of the first period with a power-play tally, putting home Tyler Wallace's centering feed for his seventh of the campaign.

Mickel doubled the Purple Eagles margin less than two minutes into the second, depositing his own rebound into the Canisius goal during 4-on-4 play for his first collegiate tally.

Tarr got Canisius on the board just before the eight-minute mark of the middle frame with a power-play goal as he out-waited the Niagara defense before tucking the puck inside the right post from below the goal line to make it a 2-1 contest.
Brockhoff restored Niagara's two-goal cushion at the 11:55 mark of the second when he beat Fessenden to the blocker side on the rush for his first collegiate tally.

Rodne made it a 4-1 contest on the power play by placing a wrist shot over the glove of Fessenden from the left face-off circle a little more than six minutes into the third.

Giampa attempted to pull the Griffs back into the contest, one-timing senior Jackson Decker's cross-ice feed past Fiske less than 30 seconds after Rodne's tally for his league-leading 15th goal of the season.
That would be as close as the Griffs would get, as Niagara kept Canisius off the scoreboard the rest of the way to record the two-goal victory.

GAME NOTES
• The 16 shots by Niagara on Friday were a season-low for a Canisius opponent. That total also represented the fewest shots allowed by the Griffs since they surrendered 16 shots against in a 5-1 victory at Niagara on Feb. 26, 2021.
• Niagara was 2-for-3 on the power play while Canisius was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
• Giampa's goal moved him into a tie with Boston University's Macklin Celebrini for the national lead among freshman for goals scored this season.
• Senior forward Max Kouznetsov tallied multiple points in a game for third time this season as he recorded two assists on Friday.
• Tarr recorded his second power-play goal of the season with his second-period tally on Friday. He is one of six Canisius players tied for the team lead in that category.
• Senior forward Griffin Loughran made his return to the lineup on Friday after missing the last 13 games due to injury.
• Senior defenseman Jackson Decker extended his point-scoring streak to four games with his primary assist on Giampa's third-period tally (2g/3a).
