Fairfield Stumps Women's Basketball

Fairfield led wire-to-wire as it defeated Canisius, 70-42, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Conn.
 
The Stags improved to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in MAAC play with their 15th consecutive victory while the Golden Griffins fell to 11-8 on the season and 6-4 in conference action.
 
Janelle Brown paced the Stags with 19 points while reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Meghan Andersen chipped in 16. On the glass, Kaety L'Amoreaux and Izabella Nicoletti-Leite each grabbed a team-high four rebounds with Nicoletti-Leite also dishing out a game-high five assists.


Junior Athina Lexa led the Griffs with 15 points while graduate student Grace Heeps added in 13 points to go along with a game-high seven boards. Heeps and Lexa also led the team in 3-pointers made with three apiece.
 
Fairfield controlled the game from the opening tip, holding Canisius to just 3-of-12 (.250) shooting while going 7-of-15 (.467) from the field to build a 17-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Stags continued their torrid offensive pace to open the second quarter, using a 9-0 run to expand their lead to 24-8. The Griffs offense found a spark in the later stages of the first half, tallying 12 of the final 18 points of the second quarter to trim the Fairfield advantage to 31-19 heading into the halftime break.
 
 
The third quarter saw the two sides keep pace with each other as both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field, allowing the Stags to carry a 51-37 advantage into the final frame.
 
Fairfield put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Griffs by a 19-5 margin during the final 10 minutes of regulation to cruise to the 28-point victory and complete a sweep of the regular-season series.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game marked the 72nd all-time meeting between the two rivals, with the series now at 45-27 in favor of Fairfield. Canisius is now 8-24 on the road all time against the Stags.
• Heeps' 13 points fell one shy of her season high 14 which she set on Dec. 18 at Marist
• Saturday's game marked the first time this season that Canisius scored less than 50 points against a MAAC opponent. The last instance came on March 2, 2023 against Mount St. Mary's, when they scored 44 points.
• Canisius only attempted five free-throws in the contest. The last time the Griffs took five-or-less attempts from the charity stripe was on Nov. 26 at Illinois.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius returns home Tuesday to face Niagara in the 103rd edition of the Battle of the Bridge. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., with the game airing on ESPN+.
