Marist Pulls Away for Win Over Men’s Basketball

Marist guard Josh Pascarelli scored a game-high 20 points and the visiting Red Foxes shot 52.6 percent from 3-point land en route to an 80-71 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win moved Marist to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in conference games, while the Golden Griffins fell to 8-12 overall and 3-7 in league action.

For Canisius, junior Tre Dinkins led the way offensively with 18 points to go along with two assists and two steals. Fellow junior Frank Mitchell recorded his 10th double-double of the year with 17 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while junior TJ Gadsden and sophomore Cam Palesse each added nine points in the losing effort. Canisius shot 50.0 percent from the field in the loss, but made just 6-of-21 3-point tries and the Blue and Gold turned the ball over 14 times, which Marist converted into 22 points.

Mitchell, who entered the day ranked sixth in the nation in rebounding average, became the first Griff since Larry Fogle in 1973-74 to grab 15-or more rebounds in four-straight games. He now has six games this season with 15-or more rebounds to his credit, the most for a Canisius player since Ron Peaks did that in 1977-78, and his 17 rebounds on Sunday are the most for a Canisius player on the Koessler Athletic Center floor since former Griff Josiah Heath had 17 boards in a game against Marist on Feb. 1, 2015.

Pascarelli was one of four Marist players to register double-figures in the scoring column as Marist reached 80 points on the scoreboard for the second time this season. Max Allen II had 18 points and four assists, while Kam Farris came off the bench and made four of the Red Foxes' 10 3-point field goals. He finished the day with 16 points. Javon Cooley added 10 points as well, as Marist ended the contest with 22 assists on 34-made field goals.

GAME RECAP
Canisius took a 23-17 lead with 7:51 left to play in the first half on a fast-break bucket by sophomore Devean Williams, which forced a Marist timeout. Out of that timeout, the Red Foxes took over, using a 20-8 run over the final 7:40 of the opening frame to turn that six-point Canisius lead into a 37-31 advantage at the halftime intermission.

Midway through the second half, Marist's lead ballooned to as many as 12 points at 56-44 with 10:47 left on the clock. Canisius made a push to get back into the game thanks to five-straight points from Palesse, forcing Marist to use a 30-second timeout with 10:12 left in the contest. Out of that stoppage, Marist scored nine of the game's next 12 points, capped by a 3-pointer from Pascarelli with 7:41 remaining, to push its lead back to 13 points at 65-52.

The Griffs scored five points in the span of 50 seconds in the closing 1:30 of the ball game to draw within seven points at 78-71, but Marist was able to break Canisius' late-game pressure with a long lead pass that Farris grabbed and then laid off the glass with 25 ticks remaining to close out the day's scoring.

HEAD COACH REGGIE WITHERPSPOON'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"This was very frustrating today. We had more than a few times where we had guys wide open and we just didn't connect with simple passes."

"I thought Marist did a good job with their pick-and-roll game to get [Max Allen II] the ball. We saw him on film, we knew coming in that he's a really good player. At times, when we came down to double-team him, we got ourselves out of position and that left their guys with some wide-open looks."

"We've been pretty good at defending the 3-point line this year, but today, when we came down to double their post players, they did a good job to find that open man. There were other times, however, that we just too slow in our rotations, and they took advantage of that."

GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the 59th all-time meeting between Canisius and Marist. The Griffs lead the series 35-24, but the Red Foxes have won the last three straight.

• Mitchell is one of 19 players in the nation with 10-or more double-double performances to his credit this season.
• Dinkins' 18-point effort on Sunday gives him double-figures in the scoring column in three-straight games and in 17 contests this season.
