Men’s Basketball Can’t Get Over the Hump in Loss at Mount St. Mary’s

Mount St. Mary's graduate student George Tinsley scored a season-high 18 points and senior teammate Dakota Leffew added 12 points and seven rebounds to help lead the host Mountaineers to a 74-69 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Friday night at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.

The win moved Mount St. Mary's to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in league play with their third-straight loss.

Four Canisius players scored in double-figures in the loss, led by junior Tre Dinkins, who had a team-high 18 points. Junior Frank Mitchell recorded his MAAC-leading sixth double-double of the year with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Siem Uijtendaal chipped in 12 points to go with three steals and two assists. Junior TJ Gadsden was good for 11 points and six rebounds and senior Bryce Okpoh had a career-high 11 boards in the losing effort for Canisius, which shot 38.2 percent from the field, 26.1 percent from 3-point land and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line on the night.

GAME RECAP
Canisius led 17-14 with 12:19 left before halftime before Mount St. Mary's took control on the power of a 17-3 run over the span of 5:08 to take a 31-20 lead. In that run, which was capped by a bucket by Tinsley, the Mountaineers knocked down three 3-point field goals. The Griffs used a 12-4 run of their own in the final 4:00 of the opening stanza to trim Mount's lead to three points at 37-34 at the halftime intermission.

In the second half, Mount St. Mary's stretched its lead to nine points at 68-59 with 6:33 left to play after De'Shayne Montgomery knocked down a jumper in the paint. Moments later, an offensive rebound and a put-back by Mitchell with 4:50 left to play got Canisius within five points at 70-65, and a bucket by Uijtendaal 36 seconds later trimmed Mount St. Mary's cushion to 70-67.

Out of the game's final media timeout, Mount turned the ball over, setting up a jumper by Dinkins with 3:08 showing on the clock that made the score 70-69 in favor of the home team. After the team's traded misses, Mount sealed the win with a basket on a back-door cut by Jedy Cordilla with 1:06 left to play that made the score 72-69. The Griffs had two chances to tie the game in the final 59.7 seconds of the contest, but the Blue and Gold came up empty, and a pair of makes at the free-throw line by Leffew with 2.2 seconds remaining closed out the scoring.
