Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fairfield Uses Third Quarter Surge to Defeat Women's Basketball

Fairfield used 12-0 run late in the third quarter to pull away from Canisius and earn a 64-51 victory in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win improved the Stags to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in league action.

Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Meghan Andersen led all scorers with 19 points, with her teammate, Janelle Brown, posting 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Katey L'Amoreaux and Kendall McGruder chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively for Fairfield, which has now won 10-straight games dating back to Nov. 20.

Graduate student Bri Rozzi led Canisius in scoring with a season-high 13 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore Sisi Eleko added 10 points and six boards. For the game, Canisius shot 38.5 percent from the field and made just 2-of-12 tries from behind the 3-point arc.

Fairfield took a 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime despite shooting just 32.4 percent from the field in the opening 20:00, as seven of the Stags' first 11 buckets came from 3-point land. The Griffs came out of the halftime break on fire offensively, using a 14-5 run over the span of the first 5:33 of the third quarter to eventually take a 37-36 lead. In that run, which was capped by a jumper from Rozzi, five different Griffs scored, with graduate student Grace Heeps and junior Athina Lexa each posting four points to aid the Blue and Gold's efforts.

After the Griffs' took a 38-36 lead moments later on a free-throw make by Eleko, Fairfield scored the final 10 points of the third quarter to regain the momentum, taking a 48-38 lead into the fourth quarter. In that run, five of the Stags' points came from the free-throw line, and Anderson hit Fairfield's only 3-point field goal of the second half with 55 seconds left in the frame to push the Stags' cushion to 10 points.

Trailing by a dozen points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Rozzi scored six-straight for the Griffs, and a bucket by Mackenzie Amalia with 6:15 left in the game got the Griffs within six at 52-46, however, Fairfield outscored Canisius 12-5 in the game's closing 5:51 to seal the victory.
