Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Late Goals Not Enough as Hockey Edged by Clarkson

Clarkson scored three goals in the opening 2:31 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie and held off a late rally to beat Canisius, 4-3, In collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Eric Ciccolini, Mathieu Gosselin, Dalmon Gardner and Cody Monds all scored for the Golden Knights (10-8-1). Brady Parker recorded 25 saves between the pipes for Clarkson as he made his first start of the season.

Sophomore Oliver Tarr tallied two goals and freshman Matteo Giampa notched his league-leading 14th goal of the campaign for the Golden Griffins (6-12-3). Senior David Fessenden made 20 saves in goal for Canisius.

Tied at 1-1 at the start of the third, Gardner put Clarkson in front just 44 seconds into the final frame with a power-play goal, tucking the puck past the left leg of Fessenden to make it a 2-1 contest.

Gardner stretched the Golden Knights advantage to two just 23 seconds later, depositing Oliver Moberg's cross-ice feed into the Canisius goal for his first collegiate tally.

Monds capped Clarkson's early third-period surge with an even-strength goal, beating Fessenden with a shot between the legs from the middle of the slot to make it a 4-1 game.

Giampa gave Canisius some life when he made it a two-goal game with 11:01 elapsed in the third, wiring a slap shot over the left shoulder of Parker from the top of the slot to trim the Canisius deficit to 4-2.
Tarr got the Griffs within one with less than two minutes to play in regulation as his wraparound attempt deflected off a Clarkson defender and into the goal to make it a 4-3 contest. That would be as close as Canisius would get, however, as Clarkson held the Griffs off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the one-goal victory.

Earlier in the contest, Ciccolini opened the scoring with less than two minutes to play in the first period, firing a wrist shot from the top of the slot that deflected off a Canisius defender and between the legs of Fessenden to give the Golden Knights the lead.

Tarr brought the Griffs level with a power-play tally at the 18:46 mark of the second period, depositing senior Jackson Decker's goalmouth feed into the Clarkson goal to tie the game at 1-1 while setting the stage for the high-scoring third period.
