Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mount St. Mary's Sinks Women's Basketball with Second-Half Surge

Mount St. Mary's outscored Canisius by a 33-22 margin in the second half to post a 70-56 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.

With the win, the Mountainers improved to 9-13 overall and 6-7 in MAAC action while the Golden Griffins moved to 12-10 and 7-6 in conference play.

Jessica Tomasetti paced the Mount with a career-high 29 points to lead four players in double figures as Jo Ralfo (13), Jada Lee (10) and Isabella Hunt (10) all reached double digits in the win. Hunt and Raflo also led the home side in rebounds, grabbing eight caroms each, while Giana Hoddinott dished out a game-high five assists.

Sophomore Sisi Eleko paced the Griffs with 19 points while sophomore Brooklyn Thrash and graduate student Bri Rozzi chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Graduate student Grace Heeps hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds while junior Athina Lexa notched a team-high four assists.

The Mountaineers controlled the game during the opening stages of the contest, holding a 21-9 lead with 9:16 left in the first half after a traditional three-point play from Tomasetti. The Griffs found their wings after the Mount free-throw make, embarking on a 17-5 run that saw them connect on six of their eight attempts from the floor during the stretch to tie the game, 26-26, with 4:37 to play in the half.

The two sides traded baskets for the remainder of the opening frame, but it would be the Mount entering halftime ahead, 37-34, due in large part to a late five-point swing from the home side to counteract two free-throw makes from the Griffs.

The second half saw Canisius open the third quarter by scoring 10 of the first 16 points of the frame to retake the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 44-43, off a Thrash put-back with 5:17 remaining.

The Mount flipped the script in its favor moments later, holding the Griffs scoreless for the remainder of the third quarter and opening 2:37 of the fourth while scoring 16 points of its own to expand their lead to 15, 59-44.

The Griffs attempted a late comeback, embarking on a 10-3 run to cut their deficit to just eight, 62-54, with 2:36 left. The Mountaineers were able stymie any sort of Griffs comeback, however, closing the contest on an 8-2 run to seal the win.
