Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marist Gets Away from Men’s Basketball

The host Marist Red Foxes erased an 11-point first-half deficit and then used a strong defensive effort in the second half to earn an 87-55 win over Canisius Friday night in MAAC men's basketball action at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The win, Marist's fourth straight, improved the Red Foxes to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 9-15 overall and 4-10 in conference action with the loss.

Canisius junior Tre Dinkins scored a team-high 15 points in the loss for the Blue and Gold, who have now dropped four-straight to Marist. Senior Siem Uijtendaal was good for 12 points, while sophomore Cam Palesse posted nine points and eight rebounds. Junior Frank Mitchell returned to the Griffs' line-up after missing last Saturday's game against Iona, and he scored seven points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds. For the game, Canisius shot 38.9 percent from the floor, made 6-of-21 tries from 3-point land and connected on 7-of-10 free-throw chances, while out-rebounding Marist by a 35-31 clip.

Isaiah Brickner and Josh Pascarelli scored 16 points apiece in the win for Marist, which improved to 7-3 at home with the victory. Jaden Collins chipped in 15 points to the Marist cause, as the Red Foxes ended the night by shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from 3-point land. In the game's second half, Marist went 16-for-26 from the floor (61.5 percent) while hitting 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) of its shots from behind the arc.

GAME RECAP
With the game tied 8-8 in the early going, sophomore Devean Williams scored with 14:42 left in the opening half to give Canisius the 10-8 lead. That bucket kick-started an 11-0 run for Canisius, and a jumper in the lane by senior Bryce Okpoh with 11:13 left before the halftime break had the Griffs up 19-8. Moments later, a 3-pointer by TJ Gadsden off an offensive rebound from Mitchell gave the Blue and Gold a 24-16 lead with 7:26 left in the first half, but from there, Marist pushed back, and the Red Foxes eventually took the lead for good with 4:07 left to play before intermission after Pascarelli drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing that gave the home team the 25-24 advantage.

With a little more than 5:00 gone in the second half, Marist stretched its lead to six at 49-43 after the Red Foxes took advantage of back-to-back Canisius turnovers. Canisius trailed 51-45 with 12:08 remaining before Dinkins knocked down one of his two 3-point field goals of the night to cut the Red Foxes' cushion to three points at 51-48. A dunk by Mitchell with 8:48 remaining on the clock had Canisius down three at 53-50, but that would be as close as the Blue and Gold would get the rest of the rest of the way, as Marist outscored the Griffs 21-5 over the final 8:03 to secure the win.

HEAD COACH REGGIE WITHERPSPOON'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We talked before the game that we were going to need a sustained effort with intensity and focus, and I think our guys wore down on that. Give Marist credit, they kept fighting and they kept plugging. We knew it was going to take hard work to get through some things here tonight, and right now, we're not mature enough to get through those types of situations."

"I thought at the start, our intensity was good, but we just didn't sustain it. They got down the lane and got the shots they wanted. We had some shots and some looks in the second half – we had three or four wide open threes – and we just missed them."

GAME NOTES
• Friday was the 60th all-time meeting between the two schools, and Canisius leads the series 35-25. However, the Red Foxes have defeated the Griffs in each of the last four match-ups and seven of the last eight meetings, dating back to the 2020-21 campaign.
• Marist scored 19 points off 17 Canisius turnovers, with nine of those points coming in the game's second half.
• Dinkins now has 98 career 3-pointers, which is the most for any active player on the Griffs' roster.
• Dinkins' first 3-point make of the game at the 16:00 mark of the first half extended the Griffs' string of making at least one trey in a game to 888 consecutive contests, a stretch that dates back to Jan. 26, 1995.
• Mitchell now has 14-or more rebounds in each of the last seven games he has appeared in.
• Sophomore Youri Fritz grabbed seven rebounds off the bench, his ninth game this season where he has grabbed five-or more boards.
• Williams led Canisius with three assists, the second-straight game where he has led the team in assists.
