No. 20 RIT Rolls Past Hockey Friday

No. 20 RIT scored nine unanswered goals to erase an early deficit and roll to a 9-2 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.

Matthew Wilde and Christian Catallano each scored a pair of goals to pace a potent Tigers (21-10-2, 17-7-1 AHA) attack that outshot the Golden Griffins (11-18-4, 10-11-4 AHA) by a 53-23 margin for the contest. Tommy Scarfone made 21 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Junior Matt Vermaeten and freshman Trey Funk accounted for the two Canisius tallies.

Funk opened the scoring at the 5:08 mark of the first period, beating Scarfone on the backhand during a 2-on-1 rush for his seventh goal of the season.

It was all RIT after Funk's opening marker, as the Tigers responded with three goals in a nearly seven-minute span midway through the opening frame to grab a 3-1 lead.

Wilde brought the Tigers level with 8:48 elapsed in the first, slamming home a loose puck from in front of the Canisius goal to make it a 1-1 contest.

Grady Hobbs and Tanner Andrew struck just 25 seconds apart later in the period to give RIT the lead as Hobbs scored on a turnaround shot from the top of the slot before Andrew struck on the next shift, collecting a turnover deep in the Canisius zone before lifting a backhand over the right pad of senior David Fessenden to put the Tigers up by a pair.

RIT expanded its lead with a trio of tallies in the second period. Catalano started the scoring in the middle frame just before the six-minute mark when he fired home a loose puck from the bottom of the slot for his fourth of the campaign.

Elijah Gonsalves added to the Tigers cushion with less than four minutes to play in the second, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with a wrist shot from the middle of the slot.

Tyler Mahan closed out the second-period outburst in the final minute of the frame, putting home his own rebound while on the rush to stretch the Tigers advantage to 6-1.

The third period saw Wilde and Catalano add their second goals of the game while Stewart Crossley got his first of the evening to push the Tigers advantage to 9-1.

Vermaeten closed out the scoring with an even-strength tally with just over two minutes to determine the final margin.
