Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Takes Care of Business at Quinnipiac

The Canisius women's basketball team had four different players post double-figures in the scoring column, as the Golden Griffins went on the road and defeated Quinnipiac 69-53 in MAAC action Saturday afternoon at M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn.

The win, Canisius' third in its last four outings, improved the team to 15-11 overall and 10-7 in conference play, while the Bobcats fell to 10-16 overall and 7-10 in MAAC action. The win for Canisius serves as the program's first road win over Quinnipiac in series history.

Sophomore Sisi Eleko paced Canisius with her MAAC-leading 13th double-double, totaling 15 points and 16 rebounds. Athina Lexa (18), Brooklyn Thrash (13) and Mackenzie Amalia (12) rounded out the rest of the Griffs' scoring, while graduate student Grace Heeps added nine rebounds to the Griffs' winning effort, as the Blue and Gold ended the day with a 41-28 advantage on the glass.

Anna Foley led Quinnipiac with 24 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Grace LaBarge scored 12 points in the losing cause. For the game, Quinnipiac shot just 32.2 percent from the field and made 4-of-25 shots from behind the 3-point arc.

GAME RECAP
The Griffs controlled the game from the start, limiting the Bobcats to just two makes from the field while scoring 11 of the first 14 points of the contest to jump out to a 13-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

After exchanging buckets to begin the second quarter, the Griffs' offense took off, using a 10-3 run to build a double-digit advantage at 28-16 with 4:31 left in the opening half. The Bobcats interrupted the Canisius run with a free-throw make, but the Blue and Gold closed the first half by scoring seven of the final nine points to head into the locker room at halftime up 35-19.

Out of halftime, the Bobcats and Griffs again found themselves going bucket-for-bucket for most of the frame, but an 8-4 run by Canisius in the middle part of the quarter, paced by six points from the charity stripe, helped keep its double-digit lead intact at 53-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Quinnipiac tried to mount one final comeback, scoring nine of the first 12 points in the final quarter to cut the Griffs lead to 13 at 56-43 with 5:41 left and force a Canisius timeout. The run would not phase the Griffs, however, as they went bucket-for-bucket with the Bobcats the rest of the way, sealing the game with a make from junior Xanthippi Karatasiou with under 1:00 left to play.
