Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late-Game Comeback Lifts Men’s Lacrosse to Victory at Siena

Canisius scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat Siena, 13-12, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Senior Jackson Webster (3g, 1a) and junior Patrick Mitchell (1g, 3a) tallied four points apiece to lead the Golden Griffins (3-7, 1-3 MAAC) attack. Seniors Keegan Kozack and Hunter Parucki tallied two goals apiece while junior Mikey Howe and sophomore Alexis Simard finished with a goal and an assist each.

Junior Tommy Kunz matched his season high with 15 saves between the pipes for Canisius. Sophomore Micah Hanson recorded 14 face-off wins and added in a team-high 10 ground balls.

Jack Cavaioli recorded two goals and added four assists to lead the Saints (3-6, 1-3 MAAC). Caden Olmstead and Pratt Reynolds each recorded hat tricks while Patrick Radomski pitched in a pair of tallies. Dylan Pape recorded 15 wins at the face-off "X" and scooped up a game-high 13 ground balls.

Trailing 12-11 with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Parucki drew Canisius level with his second of the game on a feed from Webster.

The game remained tied until the final minute of regulation, when Webster beat Siena goalie Andrew Arcuri with a shot inside the right post to give the Griffs a one-goal cushion.
The Saints won the ensuing faceoff and maintained possession until the final buzzer but were unable to net the equalizer as the Canisius defense, highlighted by a last-second save by Kunz on a point-blank chance from Olmstead, secured the win for the Griffs. Earlier in the contest, Siena trailed 2-1 before netting the final three goals of the opening frame to build a 4-2 lead after one.

Canisius battled back in the early stages of the second quarter, scoring twice in the opening minute to spark a 3-1 spurt that tied the game at 5-5 with 8:48 to play before the break.

The Saints took control of the game moments later as Olmstead notched his second of the quarter just 24 seconds after the Griffs' equalizer to spark a four-goal outburst that lasted until the halftime buzzer and allowed Siena to build a 9-5 cushion.

Canisius got back into the contest in the third, scoring five of the six goals tallied in the frame to knot the score at 10-10. Five different players found the back of the net during the Griffs' third-quarter surge, with Mitchell also chipping in a pair of assists during the frame.

The fourth quarter saw the teams exchange tallies, with Cavaioli completing his hat trick with 5:39 remaining to give the Saints a 12-11 lead, setting the stage for the Griffs' late-game comeback.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"It was a total team effort today. Our guys banded together. It would have been easy for the team to fold, especially trailing by four at halftime. But it was great to see them battle back and come out with the victory this afternoon against a tough Siena squad. All three facets of our game – offense, defense and transition – made positive contributions today, which is something that we haven't had in many of our games this season, so that was certainly great to see.

"Today's win keeps us in the fight to be in the top six to qualify for postseason play. It also shows the hard work that the guys have been putting in and the systems that we run as a team will pay off when we do things the right way. We've got a quick turnaround to Saturday, but we're going to enjoy this win today and then we're going to get back to work to prepare for a talented VMI team on Saturday."
