Women's Lacrosse Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Siena

Taryn Asselin scored with 1:43 remaining in overtime to lift Siena to a 12-11 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Saints improved their record to 7-3 and 2-0 in MAAC play while the Golden Griffins saw their seven-game win streak snapped as their record moved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Kelly Logue and Asselin paced Siena with four and three goals, respectively, while Grace Dobrzynski provided a game-high six assists. Laura Bonomo led the Saints defense with two caused turnovers and six draw-control wins. In net, Sabrina Krasner made five saves for the win.

Graduate student Paige Stahcura led Canisius with four goals, one assist and three caused turnovers. Freshman Maddie Fitzgerald recorded her second consecutive hat trick while senior Riley Davis notched two goals of her own. Senior Maddie Mazur and freshman Mya Zeller each won three draw controls. Sophomore Jody Chu made a season-high 16 saves.

Trailing by one with less than four minutes to play in regulation, Nicholson found the back of the net for the Saints to knot the game at 11-11. Neither side found the back of the net before the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

The Saints won the opening draw control in overtime to get possession and took advantage as Asselin received a pass from Dobrzynski and buried the ball into the back of the net, sending Siena home with the win.

Canisius struck first to open the contest, scoring twice in the first five minutes, with Fitzgerald and Stachura each finding the net. The Saints answered the Griffs opening salvo, rattling off four unanswered goals to close the frame and hold a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

The Griffs again struck first to begin the second stanza, with junior Hailey Rooney batting a loose ball into the back of the net to cut Canisius' deficit to just one, 4-3. Both teams scored two more times before the half ended, letting the visitors keep their lead in tact by one, 6-5, heading into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw the Griffs' offense erupt for four goals over the opening 8:06 to reclaim the lead, 9-6, with Stachura and Fitzgerald each completing their hat tricks during the run. The teams exchanged tallies before the end of the quarter to send the Blue and Gold into the fourth ahead, 10-7.

The Saints flipped the game back to their favor to begin the final frame, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game, 10-10, with 7:38 left. The Griff had an answer thanks to a free-position goal from senior Maddie Mazur to regain the lead, 11-10, setting the scene for the Saints' late-game comeback.
