Women's Basketball Ends Regular Season with Loss at Niagara

Niagara had four different players finish in double figures as it cruised to an 84-50 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Center in Lewiston, N.Y.
 
With the win, the Purple Eagles complete the regular season with an 18-12 overall record and 15-5 mark in conference play. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, conclude the regular season with a 16-13 record and 11-9 ledger in MAAC action.
 
Aaliyah Parker led Niagara with 13 points, while her sister Angel Parker, Destiny Strother and Chardonnay Hartley rounded out the Purple Eagles scoring with 12 points each. Hartley also provided a game-high five assists. On the glass, Saige Glover pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added two blocks.
 
Sophomore Sisi Eleko paced the Griffs with 18 points and nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double. Senior Mackenzie Amalia totaled a team-high three assists and graduate student Grace Heeps fell one short of her season-high in steals with three.
 
Niagara controlled the game from the opening whistle, limiting the Griffs to just seven points on 2-of-9 (.222) shooting while notching 17 points of its own on 6-of-15 (.400) shooting to hold an early 17-7 lead after 10 minutes.
 
The Purple Eagles continued to control play during the opening stages of the second quarter, scoring 13 of the first 17 points of the frame to expand their lead to 30-11 with 5:15 to play in the frame. The Griffs were able to generate some offense before halftime, using eight points from Amalia to close the quarter on a 15-8 run and enter the locker room trailing 38-26. 
 
In the second half, the Purple Eagles outscored Canisius by a 46-24 margin to seal the victory.
 
GAME NOTES:
• Canisius is now 60-44 all-time against Niagara with the Purple Eagles having won the last six meetings. 
• The Battle of the Bridge rivalry is tied with the Maine and New Hampshire rivalry for the eighth most played Division I women's basketball rivalry with 104 prior meetings after today. The Duel in the Desert Series between Arizona and Arizona state ranks above the Battle of the Bridge in seventh with 105 prior meetings.
• With her nine rebounds on Saturday, Eleko sits 24 boards away from passing Mary Achramovich (1981-82) for the program's single season rebounding record at 336.
• Canisius shot 4-of-18 (.222) from deep compared to 10-of-27 (.370) from Niagara. It is only the fourth time this season the Blue and Gold had less makes than their opponent from deep and they are now 1-3 in those games.
• Graduate student Bri Rozzi appeared in her first game since Feb. 10 at Mount St. Mary's. The Highland, N.Y., native played three minutes this afternoon.
• The Griffs' 16 wins during the regular season are the most since they won 21 contests during the 2008-09 campaign. 
• At the free-throw line, Canisius was 18-of-23 (.781) compared to 16-of-21 (.762) for Niagara

Canisius has secured the No. 5 seed for the upcoming MAAC Women's Basketball Championship. The Griffs will face No. 4 seed Manhattan in quarterfinal-round action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The game will air live on ESPN+.
