Men’s Lacrosse Records Win Versus Mount St. Mary’s Wednesday

Canisius notched five unanswered goals in the second quarter to grab the lead and held off a late charge by Mount St. Mary's to post an 11-10 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.
 
Junior Patrick Mitchell scored two goals and added an assist to pace a balanced Golden Griffins (4-9, 2-5 MAAC) attack. Senior Hunter Parucki, redshirt junior Mikey Howe and freshman Mason Wolford all pitched two goals each while senior Keegan Kozack finished with a goal and an assist.
 
Sophomore Micah Hanson recorded 11 face-off wins and a game-high eight ground balls while junior Tommy Kunz finished with 12 saves between the pipes, highlighted by nine stops in the second half.
 
Cormac Giblin finished with four goals to lead the Mountaineers (1-12, 1-6 MAAC). Brody Atkinson and Kevin Whitty both recorded a goal and an assist while Mitchell Dunham dished out two assists.
 
Mount St. Mary's held a 3-2 lead at the start of the second quarter when goals from Howe and Mitchell in a 24-second span ignited the game-changing surge that lasted more than eight minutes and gave the Griffs a 7-3 lead with less than five minutes to play in the frame.  
The teams traded goals in the last two minutes of the quarter to give Canisius an 8-4 advantage heading into the locker room.
 
The Mount scored three of the first four goals registered in the second half to pull within two, 9-7, with 13:38 to play in regulation.
 
Goals from Howe and Simard sandwiched around Giblin's third of the afternoon gave the Griffs an 11-8 cushion with 9:22 remaining.
Mount St. Mary's made a late-game push, using goals from Giblin and Kevin Whitty to pull within one with nine seconds remaining, but the Canisius defense was able to keep the Mount from netting the equalizer on the last possession of the game, securing the one-goal win.
 
POSTGAME COMMENTS
GAME NOTES
• Canisius picked up its fourth one-goal victory of the season with Wednesday's victory. The Griffs are now a combined 13-11 mark in games decided by a single tally in the Miyashita era.
• Mount St. Mary's outshot Canisius by a 47-36 margin for the contest, highlighted by an 18-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.
• Canisius was 0-for-5 in man-up situations while Mount St. Mary's was 1-for-3. Both teams recorded man-down goals during the contest.
• The Griffs were charged with 21 turnovers while the Mount finished with 22 miscues.
• The teams split the 24 draws contested on Wednesday, with both sides going 12-of-24.
• Kunz recorded double-digit saves in a game for the 12th time this season with his 12-save performance on Wednesday.
• Simard recorded the first game-winning goal of his career on Wednesday and also scooped up a career-high five ground balls in the win.
• Kozack notched two points on Wednesday, moving his career point total to 97 and leaving him just three points away from becoming the 24th player in program history to reach the century mark for his career.
•Hanson finished with eight-or-more ground balls for the fifth straight game and the eighth time this season with his eight ground balls on Wednesday.  
 
UP NEXT
Canisius takes to the road for the final time in the regular season as it travels to Wagner Saturday for a MAAC contest. Start time for the matchup between the Griffs and Seahawks is slated for noon at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y.
