Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Sacred Heart Saturday

Jake Ward scored tallied a game-high four points to lead Sacred Heart to a 13-12 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Ward scored three goals and added an assist to pace the Pioneers (11-4, 9-0 MAAC), who finished the regular season undefeated in league play to secure the MAAC regular-season title. Morgan O'Reilly and Johnny Morgan both notched three points on two goals and an assist each while Carson Spooner and James Moran pitched in two goals apiece.

Freshman Mason Wolford recorded a hat trick for the Golden Griffins (5-10, 3-6 MAAC). Senior Jackson Webster and junior Mikey Howe both notched three points as they finished with two goals and an assist each.

Junior Tommy Kunz recorded 12 saves in goal while sophomore Micah Hanson went 17-of-29 at the face-off X, scooped up a game-best 12 ground balls and added a goal and an assist.

Tied at 1-1 midway through the first quarter, SHU tallied three unanswered goals over a 10-minute span to build a 4-1 advantage early in the second quarter.

Canisius answered back moments later as Howe's first of the contest followed by goals from Simard and Parucki less than a minute apart brought the Griffs level, 4-4.

SHU and Canisius traded tallies during the later stages of the second quarter to send the teams to the locker room tied at 5-5.

In the second half, the Pioneers scored four of the first five goals to grab a 9-6 lead, only to see the Griffs counter with a 3-1 spurt of their own to make it a one-goal game with 9:29 to play in the fourth.

A 3-1 SHU spurt over a 2:40 span restored the Pioneers' three-goal cushion with less than five minutes to play in regulation.

Canisius did not go down without a fight, however, using goals from Wolford and Webster to make it a one-goal game with 1:37 on the clock. The Griffs had a chance to tie the game on their final possession, but SHU keeper Alex Pazienza came up with the save to preserve the Pioneers' lead and secure their undefeated MAAC regular season.
