Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Siena in MAAC First Round Matchup

Third-seeded Siena closed the third quarter on a 5-0 run to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat sixth-seeded Canisius, 9-6, in first round action in the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Kelly Logue scored a goal and added two assists to highlight a balanced offensive attack for the Saints (12-5), who advanced to the tournament semifinals with the win, where they will face No. 2 seed Niagara Friday in Fairfield, Conn.

Jordan Bentley and Taryn Asselin notched two goals piece while Asselin also pitched in a team-high seven draw controls. Sarah Irish finished with a goal and an assist and Sabrina Krasner recorded seven saves in goal for Siena.

Junior Hailey Rooney recorded a hat trick to pace the Golden Griffins (11-7) while MAAC Rookie of the Year Maddie Fitzgerald finished with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Jody Chu recorded nine saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Trailing 5-3 during the early stages of the third quarter after senior Caroline Netti and Rooney opened the second half scoring for Canisius, a player-up goal from Elizabeth Wamp sparked the Saints game-changing run that lasted until the end of the frame and gave Siena an 8-5 advantage.  Asselin scored twice for the Saints during the pivotal spurt while Wamp, Louge and Kylie Kuhn all added individual markers.

The fourth quarter saw the teams exchange single tallies, allowing Siena to maintain its multiple-goal cushion the rest of the way to secure its spot in the MAAC semifinals.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Fitzgerland and Rooney, only to see Siena counter with three unanswered goals, capped by a pair of tallies over a 45-second span from Bentley, to grab a 3-2 lead moments before the midway point of the second quarter.

Tifft brought the Griffs level before the halftime break, notching her first of the contest with 4:19 to play in the second quarter, sending the teams into the halftime break knotted at 3-3.

HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
