Canisius head men’s lacrosse coach Mark Miyashita announced the addition of former UAlbany standout Corey Yunker to his staff as an assistant coach in August 2023.

A native of Churchville, N.Y., Yunker joined the Golden Griffins after spending the past five seasons with the Great Danes, beginning his time in the Capital District as a player (2019-22) before making the transition to the coaching staff in 2023.

“We are excited to add Corey Yunker to our staff,” Miyashita said. “Corey comes to us from UAlbany, where he had a distinguished playing career and transitioned into the coaching ranks last year there. His energy and knowledge of the game will be a great asset for our players.”

Yunker appeared in 41 games for UAlbany during his four-year career, racking up 95 points on 65 goals and 30 assists. He was tabbed an All-America East Second Team selection as a senior, appearing in 12 games and recording 32 points (23g/9a), 18 ground balls and one caused turnover while serving as a team captain. During his junior campaign, Yunker posted career highs in goals (28), assists (11) and points (39) as he helped guide the Great Danes to an appearance in the America East Championship game

Upon completing of his playing career, Yunker made the transition to the UAlbany sidelines, serving as a volunteer assistant on veteran head coach Scott Marr’s staff for the 2023 campaign. Working with team’s attackmen, he assisted in guiding the Great Danes to an appearance in the America East Championship game.

“I'm grateful to Coach Miyashita and Coach (Derek) Marks for giving me the incredible opportunity to be on their staff at Canisius University,” Yunker said. “I'm excited to be able to learn from and work with two great coaches and individuals. I look forward to building strong relationships with the players and assisting them in their continuous improvement and development, helping them reach their full potential both on and off the field. Go Griffs!"

Prior to his time with the Great Danes, Yunker enjoyed a standout prep career at Churchville-Chili high school, playing alongside former Canisius standout Jacob Buck. The program’s all-time leader in points (340) and assists (190), Yunker tallied 80 points (34 goals, 46 assists) as a senior on his way to earning 2018 Section V Sportsman of the Year accolades. An All-AGR and all-league first team selection in 2018, Yunker also played in the 2018 Rochester US Lacrosse Senior All-Star Game and was the team’s most valuable player as a junior.
