Matt Cosmann

Matt Cosmann is entering his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Canisius rowing program. A former coxswain at Syracuse University, Cosmann comes from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, where he served as a coach on the Marauders’ rowing staff since 2013.

Cosmann started coaching at his high school alma mater in 2013 when he took on the role as first varsity assistant coach for the Marauders. In 2016, Cosmann took on a new position with the program, becoming the head freshman/novice coach, where he guided the Marauders’ freshmen eight crew to back-to-back gold medals at the New York State Scholastic Championship.

Cosmann entered the coaching ranks in 2010, joining the coaching staff at the West Side Rowing Club, working his way up to his current position as an assistant coach for the U23 Senior Women and U19 Junior Women crews. Cosmann also worked as the head junior men’s coach for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club in the summer of 2012.

After starting his rowing career as a coxswain at St. Joe’s, Cosmann moved on to Syracuse where he was the top varsity coxswain for four seasons with the Orange, winning the Eastern Sprints during his time there. He also coxswained for the West Side Rowing Club from 2006-11, winning the US Rowing Club Nationals in 2010.

The West Side Rowing Club’s 2019 Dennis Call Novice Coach of the Year, Cosmann earned his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 2013. He is currently pursuing his MBA degree at the College.
