Men’s Soccer Drops Sunday Match to Iona

Iona forward Camil Azzam Ruiz scored two goals to propel Iona to a 4-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Sunday in New Rochelle, N.Y.

With the win, the Gaels improved to 4-2-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, slipped to 1-7-3 and 0-2-1 in the MAAC.

GAME RECAP
Iona got the scoring started right away as it found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Two passes from Aly Camara and Matias Morales found Francesco Borla, whose shot from the top of the box was initially saved by Canisius keeper Jack Petrie, but the rebound ricocheted off of a Canisius defender and into the net.

The Gaels doubled their advantage at the 20:46 mark as Borla teamed up with Camara for the second Iona goal, stretching the lead to 2-0.

The Griffs answered quickly, with junior Ely Sidibe driving down the field and finding sophomore Glodie Mata for the precise strike, cutting the Iona lead in half, 2-1. The goal marked Mata's second goal of the season and Sidibe's team-leading third assist.

The Gaels were able to find one more goal before the break, as Azzam Ruiz scored the first of his two goals in the 37th minute with an assist from Alessio Hernandez.

Iona controlled much of the possession in the second half, adding an insurance marker at the 64:37 with Azzam Ruiz collecting his second goal to secure victory for the Gaels.

Petrie set a career high in saves during the match with 11 stops off of 25 shots faced.
