Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer plays to 1-1 draw versus Fairfield Saturday

Sophomore Glodie Mata netted his third goal of the season in the 36th minute to pace Canisius in a 1-1 draw versus Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The draw moved the Golden Griffins' to 1-7-4 overall and 0-2-2 in league play on the campaign while the Stags played in their first draw this season, seeing their season record shift to 3-6-1 with an 0-3-1 ledger in conference play.

GAME RECAP
The two best scoring offenses in the MAAC found each other in a defensive battle for the first half of the match, as each team refused to surrender a shot on target until the 36th minute.

Mata was the first to find the net, scoring an unassisted goal with an extreme individual effort. Mata took three total shots, his first ricocheting off the right post and the second blocked by a Faifield defender before he was able to put the ball into the back of the Stags goal on his third attempt.

With the Griffs up 1-0 after the break, Fairfield began to pressure the Canisius defense, resulting in the Stags maintaining possession for the majority of the second half.

Fairfield's goal came at the 62:44 mark, with William Pierce taking a shot from just outside the box that snuck past Canisius keeper Jack Petrie and inside the left post to even up the match at 1-all.

The Griffs looked for the equalizer, with senior Luke Szablewski and freshman Matthew Fischer each made deep drives into Fairfield territory, but both were stifled by the Stag backend.

Petrie made two saves between the pipes for Canisius while Fairfield keeper James Anderson also finished with two saves in the contest.

Thoughts on the game with Head Coach Michael Tanke and sophomore forward Glodie Mata.

  GAME NOTES
•Today's draw marks the lowest score held by the Canisius defense this season, allowing a season low one goal and season low three shots on target
•Eight players for the Griffs played all 90 minutes, highlighted by the backline defenders Inder Thind, AJ Zarcone and Kevin Villacorta
Glodie Mata's third goal of the season was also his second goal in two games, as he scored the lone goal in last Sunday's conest at Iona
•Mata joins Daniel Longo and Michael Switala as the third Canisius player with three-or-more goals this season. This marks the first time since 2018 that the Griffs have had three players register at least three goals in a season
