Women's Soccer Dominates Iona on Senior Day

Box Score GAME RECAP
Freshman Nicki Silverman scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to pace Canisius in a 3-0 victory over Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Sunday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Madeline Weltin and sophomore Skylar Cornell also found the back of the net for the Golden Griffins, who improved to 5-2-4 overall and 1-1-1 in league play with Sunday's shutout victory. The Gaels, meanwhile, moved to 1-10-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in MAAC action with the setback.

The first chance of the game came three minutes in with a shot from Iona's Emily Drake that senior Jessica Jones would corral.

Canisus broke the scoreless deadlock at the 35th minute mark thanks to Silverman, who capitalized on a rebound off a Maggie Cregan shot to record her third goal of the season.

The Griffs would extend their lead to 2-0 early in the second half when Skylar Cornell placed a ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net from the middle of the box with assists from junior Emma Oliphant and Silverman.

Canisius put the final goal on the board off the foot of Weltin, who put home a rebound from a Cregan shot that Gaels keeper Savannah Rogers could not hang on to at the 75:02 mark.

Jones would make her last of three saves in the 84th minute, stopping Niki Kassimatis.
