Men’s Soccer Earns a Draw in Tight Battle with Rider

Ely Sidibe's late second-half strike completed a two-goal comeback as Canisius played to a 2-2 draw against Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

The draw brings the Golden Griffins to an overall 1-9-5 record and 0-4-3 in MAAC play, while the Broncs saw their record shift to 5-3-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the MAAC.

GAME RECAP
In a high-paced affair, Rider took a 1-0 lead at the 10:44 mark as Adel Al-Masude scored after a series of passes from David Ogbanna and Saad Chaouki. 

After the initial goal, the Broncs controlled possession for the rest of the half, out shooting the Griffs by a 16-7 margin. Rider extended the lead right before the break, with Luke Kirilenko tapping home a rebound to put the Broncs up 2-0 in the 45th minute.

Rider continued to maintain control of the tempo of the match in the second half, putting up 12 shots against the Canisius defense before the Griffs registered a shot. The Canisius defenders and keeper Spencer Catalano did not waver and shut out the Broncs in the second half, with Catalano making four saves in that period.

The Griffs received a late burst of energy from sophomore forward Glodie Mata, who upon subbing into the game at the 66:56 mark, scored immediately after in the 68th minute. Mata received a long-distance corner from freshman Mason Petrucci, and promptly buried the shot to cut the Rider lead in half.

In the 80th minute, Sidibe tied the game for the Griffs off a long ball from the Catalano was tapped to him by Edson Flores. Sidibe had been generating shots for Canisius all game, tying a team season high with three shots on target, and finally hit his mark late into the contest.

Each team furiously attempted to take the lead in the final minutes of the match, but the score remained tied by the final whistle.

Catalano made eight saves on the night, while Rider goalkeeper Adam Salama made five saves in the contest.

GAME NOTES
•The Griffs faced a season high 30 shots, with 10 of Rider's shots being on target. 
•Making his first MAAC start of the season, Catalano tied his second highest total save mark with eight saves on the night.
•Sidibe's goal marked his third of the season, increasing his point total to nine on the season.
Glodie Mata tallied his fourth goal of the season, tying sophomore Michael Switala for the team lead in goals.
Edson Flores earned his first career assist with his pass to Sidibe for the equalizing goal.
Mason Petrucci earned his third assist on the season, tying him for the team lead with Sidibe.

UP NEXT
The Griffs will continue their short homestand on Oct 21., welcoming MAAC opponent Marist to the Demske Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
