Men’s Soccer Blanked by Niagara, 3-0

Niagara scored three goals in the second half to break open a scoreless contest and defeat Canisius, 3-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y.

Concluding their 2023 road schedule, the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-11-5 overall and 0-6-3 in MAAC play. The Purple Eagles saw their record rise to 3-8-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play with the win.

GAME RECAP
Heavy rains kept the pace down in the first half, with neither team registering a goal. Niagara had the most chances in the early going, taking 12 shots, with one being saved by Canisius goalkeeper Spencer Catalano. Freshman forward Matthew Fischer took the lone shot in the first half for the Griffs.

Niagara got the scoring started quickly after the break, taking a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute as Thomas Brooks buried a shot from outside the Canisius box.

Gianluca Del Priore added to the Purple Eagle lead in the 67th minute before Felix Kogler completed the scoring for Niagara, adding an 81st-minute goal to put the final score at 3-0.

The Griffs had a series of shots on target in the final 10 minutes of the match as Josh Miller and Daniel Longo looked to get the Griffs back in the contest, but were unable to connect.

Catalano made five saves on the night off 23 shots faced, while Niagara's keeper, Jamie Barry, made two saves.
