Women's Soccer Defeats Battle of the Bridge Rival Niagara

GAME RECAP
Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell and junior midfielder Emma Oliphant each tallied a goal to lead Canisius to a 2-1 victory over Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (9-3-5, 6-2-2 MAAC) would try to get off to a hot start with their first chance of the game coming 19 seconds into the contest from the foot of Oliphant, but Purple Eagles (5-10-2, 4-4-2 MAAC) goaltender Agnes Stenlund would corral it.

Cornell opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she headed the ball past Stenlund off a corner kick from freshman Jessica Whitaker.

Niagara would answer six minutes later with its first shot of the contest coming from Amanda Cripps that would go past Griffs senior goaltender Jessica Jones.

The game would remain tied for the 39:49 mark, when Oliphant collected a Sophia Konstantinou free kick on the right side of the field and placed a shot into the right side of the net to give the Griffs a 2-1 lead.

Canisius would record five shots in 10 minutes to start the second half, led by Cornell with three, but none could find a way past Stenlund.

Jones would make all three of her saves in the second half to keep Canisius in front as the Griffs held on for the one-goal victory.

Stenlund finished with 11 saves between the pipes for the Purple Eagles.
