Women's Soccer Takes Down Fairfield 1-0

Game Recap
Sophomore midfielder Skylar Cornell scored the only goal of the contest in the 34th minute to power Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Farifield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Lessing Field in Fairfield, Conn.

Junior keeper Jordan Spencer recorded three saves for the Golden Griffins (6-2-4, 3-1-1 MAAC), with her biggest save coming in the 13th minute when she punched away a shot from the Stags (5-5-3, 3-2-0 MAAC) Elle Scott to keep the game knotted at zero.

Canisius' first shot on goal would come in the 34th minute and it would result in the game-winning goal from Cornell. Senior Sophie Chelini broke up a Stags outlet attempt and found Emma Oliphant downfield, who was able to put the ball through the defenders legs to Cornell, who then beat Katie Wright with a shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

With a couple minutes left in the first half, Dana Nadda fired a shot on net that Spencer tried to push aside but Meghan Carragher got the rebound and put a shot on net that Meghan Heath would slide and clear off the goal line to preserve the lead.

The Stags looked to tie the game early in the second half with two shots from Reagan Klarmann and Aubrey Silverman, but both attempts would go wide of the goal.

Canisius' first chance of the second half came from the foot of Oliphant in the 58th minute, but her shot would go just wide.

Fairfield continued to apply pressure on the Griffs, with 15 of their 18 shots coming in the second half, but the Canisius defense would hold strong, limiting the Stags to just two corner kicks in the final minutes of the game.

The Golden Griffins would clear the ball to give Cornell her second shot of the game in the 89th minute to close out the victory.
