Hockey Rallies in Third for 6-4 victory at Army

Canisius scored three unanswered goals in the later stages of the third period to rally from a one-goal deficit and defeat Army, 6-4, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y.

Senior Kyle Haskins, freshman Jackson Nieuwendyk and junior Matt Vermaeten all scored during the third period for the Golden Griffins (2-6-1, 2-2-1 AHA). Graduate student Erik Urbank, senior Jackson Decker and sophomore Oliver Tarr all found the back of the net in the first period for Canisius.

Joey Baez scored twice while Ricky Lyle and John Driscoll also tallied goals for the Black Knights (0-9-0, 0-6-0 AHA).

Trailing 4-3 after Army scored less than a minute into the third period, Haskins brought the Griffs level at the 9:46 mark of the final frame, redirecting Urbank's centering feed past Army netminder Gavin Abric during 4-on-4 play to tie the game.
Nieuwendyk gave the Griffs the lead for good with less than five minutes to play in the third, grabbing a loose puck off the end wall and jamming it inside the right post to put Canisius in front, 5-4. Vermaeten closed out the scoring the final minute of the contest, wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Abric from the middle of the slot during a 5-on-3 power play for his first collegiate tally to secure the win.

Earlier in the contest, the teams combined for three special-team goals during a 1:39 span in the opening five-plus minutes of the contest.

Urbank began the sequence at the 3:54 mark of the first with a shorthanded tally, firing a wrist shot over the glove of Abric while on the rush to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead.
Army answered back with a shorthanded tally of its own less than 90 seconds later as Lyle put home a rebound after Canisius goaltender Ethan Robertson made the initial save on an attempt from Michael Sacco.

Decker restored the Canisius lead during the same power-play opportunity, receiving a pass from freshman Trey Funk at the top of the Army zone and wiring a wrist shot past the glove of Abric to make it a 2-1 contest.

Tarr gave the Griffs a two-goal cushion with exactly four minutes to play in the first, tapping home a goalmouth feed off a pass from the left sideboard by Haskins. Army tied the game with a pair of tallies during the middle stages of the second period. Driscoll made it a one-goal contest at the 10:22 mark of the second when he deflected Pierce Patterson's shot past Robertson to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Baez knotted the score at 3-3 just 2:15 later with a wrist shot from the middle of the slot that found the upper right-hand corner of the net.

Baez netted his second of the contest less than a minute into the third period, collecting the puck on his stick below the Canisius goal line and shoveling it into the goal to give the Black Knights a 4-3 lead, setting the stage for the Griffs third-period comeback.

Robertson got the start between the pipes for Canisius and made 13 saves before leaving the game in the second period with an injury. Senior David Fessenden replaced Robertson and stopped eight of nine shots faced to earn his first victory in a Canisius uniform. Abric recorded 20 stops between the pipes for Army.
