Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short in Loss to Bowling Green

Bowling Green junior Marcus Hill scored a game-high 26 points, including the game-winning bucket with less than 20 seconds left to play, to help lead the Falcons to a 77-73 win over Canisius on the final day of the 2023 Northern Classic in Bell Place Arena in Laval, Quebec. The win improved Bowling Green to 4-3 on the year, while the Golden Griffins saw their three-game win streak come to an end with the loss. Canisius is now 4-3 on the year as well.

Canisius junior Frank Mitchell scored a career-high 19 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds to lead three Griffs in double-digit scoring. Junior Tre Dinkins added 16 points and seven assists, while senior Siem Uijtendaal was good for 13 points for Canisius, which shot 47.0 percent from the field and 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from 3-point land, but made just 1-of-3 free-throw chances for the game.

Hill, who scored 33 points for Bowling Green on Saturday in its win over Wofford, finished the game by making 10-of-21 field goals, and only one of those attempts was a 3-point try. He also made 6-of-8 free-throws for the game to go along with four assists and three rebounds.

GAME RECAP
Canisius trailed 70-63 with 3:27 remaining before using a 10-3 run over the span of 2:58 to tie the game at 73-73. In that run, which was started by a traditional 3-point play by Mitchell, the Griffs erased a five-point deficit thanks to a 3-point field goal by Dinkins and a bucket by sophomore Youri Fritz with 39 ticks remaining on the clock. After a Bowling Green timeout, Hill drove down the right side of the lane and laid the ball high off the backboard for the game-winning basket with 15.2 seconds left.

Out of a timeout, Canisius had a chance to tie or take the lead in the game's closing seconds, but Uijtendaal's lay-up attempt with 4.2 seconds left was blocked by Bowling Green's Jason Spurgin. Bowling Green was able to grab the loose-ball rebound after the shot was blocked and the Falcons were able to run out the clock to secure the victory.

In the first half, Canisius was down six with 6:21 left in the opening stanza, but Canisius battled back and tied the game at 33-33 with an 8-2 run, capped by a basket by Mitchell with 4:23 left before the halftime break. Moments later, Mitchell put Canisius up 37-35 with 32 seconds left before intermission, but the Falcons took a 38-37 lead into the locker room at the break after D.J. Smith hit a 3-pointer from the far corner with time winding down to give the Falcons the one-point lead at halftime.

Spurgin added 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and the key blocked shot late in the game in the win for Bowling Green, which shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, which included seven makes from 3-point land. Bowling Green made 12-of-19 shots from the free-throw line in the victory, and the Falcons out-rebounded the Griffs 35-30 for the game, with 10 of those 35 rebounds coming off the offensive glass.
