Hockey Plays to 3-3 Draw Against Holy Cross, Falls in Shootout

Senior defenseman Hudson Lambert scored a power-play goal midway through the third period to force overtime as Canisius and Holy Cross played to a 3-3 tie in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y.

Senior Max Kouznetsov accounted for the other two goals for the Golden Griffins (1-4-1, 1-0-1 AHA) while senior Griffin Loughran and freshman Matteo Giampa both racked up three assists each in the contest.

Alec Cicero, Matt Shatsky and Jack Ricketts scored for the Crusaders (4-3-2, 1-3-2 AHA), who picked up the extra point as it won the best-of-three shootout, 2-0.

Following a scoreless first, the teams combined for a total of five goals during a frenetic second period, highlighted by a four-goal outburst that occurred over a 3:10 span.

Kouznetsov opened the scoring at the 3:10 mark of the middle frame, redirecting Giampa's centering feed into the Holy Cross goal to give the Griffs the lead.
Holy Cross answered back, tallying two goals in a 1:40 span during the later stages of the second period to take the lead. Cicero got the Crusaders on the board with 13:02 elapsed in the frame, sliding a rebound past Canisius keeper David Fessenden during 4-on-4 play to tie the game.

Shatsky pushed Holy Cross in front exactly 100 seconds later, wiring a shot from the top of the point over the right shoulder of Fessenden to put the Crusaders in front, 2-1.

Kouznetsov netted his second of the period just 31 seconds after Shatsky's tally to bring the Griffs level, jamming home a feed from Giampa for his second of the period to make it a 2-2 contest.
Ricketts capped the second-period salvo at the 16:12 mark, getting behind the Canisius defense before lifting the puck over the right shoulder of Fessenden from close range to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

Lambert tied the game for the third time with his man-advantage tally at the 11:15 mark of the third, collecting Loughran's feed in the right face-off circle and firing a shot past the glove of Holy Cross netminder Thomas Gale to tie the game at 3-3.
The game would head to overtime and then a shootout, where Lucas Thorne and Matt Guerra were successful in their shootout attempts while Loughran and sophomore Killian Kiecker-Olson were unsuccessful in theirs, giving the Crusaders the extra point.

Fessenden made 32 saves in goal for Canisius while Gale stopped 27 shots between the pipes for Holy Cross.
