Hockey Defeated by Sacred Heart in Series Opener Friday

Sacred Heart scored four unanswered goals to erase an early deficit and defeat Canisius, 4-1, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Martire Family Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Marcus Joughin scored twice while John Jawroski and Blake Humphries accounted for the other two goals for the Pioneers (4-5-0, 4-2-0 AHA). Chase Clark finished with 24 saves in goal for the hosts.

Freshman Jackson Nieuwendyk tallied the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (1-5-1, 1-1-1 AHA), opening the scoring with a shorthanded tally in the first period. Freshman Ethan Robertson made 25 stops in goal for Canisius.

Nieuwendyk staked the Griffs to a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first period, jamming home a loose puck from just off the right post for his first collegiate tally.
Humphrey tied the game at 1-1 at the 11:51 mark of the second period, putting home a rebound after Robertson made the initial save on an attempt from Kevin Lombardi.

Joughin gave the Pioneers their first lead of the contest with a little more than five minutes to play in the middle frame when his shot from the left sidewall found its way past Robertson to make it a 2-1 contest.

SHU put the game out of reach with a pair of power-play tallies in the third period. Jaworski made it a two-goal cushion for the Pioneers at the 8:46 mark of the third when his centering feed redirected off a Canisius defender's skate and into the goal.

Joughin closed out the scoring a little more than five minutes later, beating Robertson five-hole from the left faceoff circle to expand the SHU cushion to 4-1.
