Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Slow Start Dooms Hockey at Mercyhurst

Mercyhurst scored three goals in a 5:47 span midway through the first period to jump out to an early lead on its way to a 5-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Boris Skalos recorded a hat trick to pace the Lakers (5-8-3, 3-2-3 AHA) while Tommy Bannister and Keanan Stewart added individual tallies. Owen Say stopped 39 shots to pick up the win between the pipes for the home team.

Sophomore Christian MacDougall registered the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (4-8-3, 4-4-2 AHA). Senior David Fessenden made 22 saves in goal for Canisius.

Skalos began the first-period barrage with a power-play goal with 7:08 elapsed in the opening frame, beating Fessenden from the left faceoff circle after the Lakers knocked down a potential Canisius clearing attempt at the top of the zone.

Skalos struck for his second of the contest a little more than four minutes later, tucking home a rebound on the doorstep after the initial attempt from Mickey Burns was turned aside.

Bannister capped the Lakers first-period outburst just before the 13-minute mark, depositing a loose puck into the Griffs cage on a goalmouth scramble to make it a 3-0 contest.

MacDougall got Canisius on the board at the 12:51 mark of the second period, collecting the puck in the slot and sliding between the legs of Say for his first collegiate tally to trim the Griffs deficit to two.
Stewart restored the Lakers three-goal cushion a little more than three minutes later, however, redirecting a rebound past Fessenden while on the rush for his fifth of the season.

Skalos completed his hat trick moments after the midway point of the third period, tucking a wrist shot over an outstretched Fessenden and under the crossbar from the middle of the slot to determine the four-goal final margin.
