Hockey Unable to Solve RPI in Opener

RPI scored three times in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Canisius, 6-3, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Ryan Brushnet recorded a hat trick and Tyler Hotson added a pair of tallies for the Engineers (4-11-1) while Jake Gagnon accounted for the game-winning goal with his even-strength marker early in the third. Jake Watson made 34 saves between the pipes to earn the victory for the visitors.

Sophomore Grant Porter, freshman Trey Funk and senior Jackson Decker all scored for the Golden Griffins (5-10-3).

Tied at 3-3 heading into the third period, Gagnon put RPI in front for good just 13 seconds into the final frame, depositing a loose puck into the Canisius cage to give the Engineers the lead.

Hotson provided an insurance marker just 81 seconds later, beating Canisius goaltender David Fessenden with a wrist shot to the blocker side from the left faceoff circle to expand the RPI margin to 5-3.

Hotson capped the third-period scoring with a breakaway goal at the 13:57 mark to determine the three-goal margin of victory.

Earlier in the contest, Porter opened the scoring exactly three minutes into the contest with a power-play goal, beating Watson with a wrist shot over the right shoulder for his third of the season.
Brushett brought the Engineers level just past the 12-minute mark of the first, wiring a wrist shot past the blocker of Fessenden to tie the game at 1-1.

Funk restored the Canisius lead on the following shift, swatting senior Kyle Haskins' centering feed into the RPI cage for his first collegiate goal to make it a 2-1 contest.
Brushett tied the game for the second time in the opening period at the 17:30 mark of the frame, putting home a rebound from the top of the crease.

Brushett completed his hat trick a little more than four minutes into the second, firing a wrist shot over the glove of Fessenden from the right faceoff circle while on the rush to put RPI in front, 3-2.

Decker tied the game for the third and final time on a power-play goal with 15:36 elapsed in the middle frame, pushing a loose puck across the goal line from just off the left post to knot the score at 3-3, setting the stage for the Engineers third-period surge.
