Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Ends Non-Conference Play With a Win at Le Moyne

GAME RECAP
Canisius junior Madeline Weltin and freshman Nicki Silverman both scored goals to help the Golden Griffins to a 2-0 win over Le Moyne in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday at Ted Grant Field in Syracuse, N.Y.

Canisius' third-straight win improved the Griffs to 4-1-3 overall, while the Dolphins fell to 1-5-2 overall with the defeat.

The Griffs once again dominated the game in their attacking half, ending the contest with a 27-8 advantage in shots and an 15-3 margin in shots on goal. Twelve different Canisius players recorded a shot in the victory, led by Skylar Cornell, who had six, while sophomores Mia Iacona and Emma Oliphant were each credited with five shots apiece. This is third-straight contest where the Griffs ended the game with double-digit shots.

Freshman Jessica Whitaker started things off for Canisius with a shot 2:47 into the game, but that shot was stopped by Dolphins goaltender Sarah Boyea. Boyea ended the day with eight saves before she was removed from the game in the 42nd minute.

The Griffs' 11th shot of the day finally got past Boyea, as Weltin made the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold with her first goal of the season in the game's 31st minute off an assist by teammate Erin Weir. The assist for Weir is her first of the season and the fifth in her career. Weir sent the ball from the right side of the box toward Weltin, who was able to redirect the ball with a header into the lower-left corner of the goal.

Out of the halftime break, the Griffs wasted little time making the score 2-0, as Silverman settled a pass from Cornell at the top of the box and fired a shot just inside the right goal post just 22 seconds in the second stanza. The assist on Silverman's marker was the second of the season for Cornell, while sophomore Lizzy Harkness earned an assist on the play as well.

Junior Jordan Spencer started in goal for Canisius, and she made her lone save of the game in the 35th minute off a shot from Le Moyne's Sierra Edwards. Senior Jessica Jones came into the game after halftime and ended the day with two saves.
