Women's Soccer Battles for a Draw with Manhattan

GAME RECAP
Canisius sophomore Meghan Heath and freshman Elizabeth Cavanaugh both scored goals to help the Golden Griffins play to a 2-2 draw with Manhattan in MAAC women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius moves to 4-1-4 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play, extending their unbeaten streak to eight games, while the Jaspers move to 1-3-3 overall and 0-0-2 in conference.

The Griffs took an early 1-0 lead in the game's 17th minute thanks to Heath, who scored her first collegiate goal with a header off a free-kick from freshman Jessica Whitaker. Manhattan knotted the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute thanks to a goal by Sami Derrico. Manhattan's Olivia McMaster earned an assist on the gol, she she took the first shot on goal which was originally saved by Canisius keeper Jordan Spencer. However, Spencer was unable to secure the ball after making the save, and Derrico quickly deposited into the back of the Griffs' goal.

The Griffs took the lead back at 2-1 with less then 4:00 left in the opening half, as Cavanaugh found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Cavanaugh's first career marker was assisted by Sophia Konstantinou, who sent the ball to Cavanaugh off a free-kick.
 
The score stayed 2-1 until the contest's 65th minutes, when the Griffs were called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty-kick situation for the Jaspers. Manhattan's Kaitlyn Cook evened the contest at 2-2 with the goal on the PK, her first goal of the season.

Spencer made eight stops in goal for the Griffs, while Manhattan goalkeeper Margaret Brunk was credited with three stops. Canisius held a 17-12 advantage in shots, but the Jaspers ended the matvch with 10 shots on goal against just five for the Blue and Gold.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game served as the 32nd all-time meeting between the MAAC schools in a series that dates back to 1991.
• Canisius is now 15-13-4 all-time against the Jaspers.
• The draw extends the Griffs unbeaten streak to eight games, which is the longest in program history since 1989.
• Canisius has now scored multiple goals in four-straight games for the first time since 2010.
• Senior Abby Molloy re-entered the starting lineup for the first time since the season opener against Colgate.

UP NEXT
Canisius will return to MAAC play with an game against reigning champion Quinnipiac on Saturday. Opening kickoff for the contest between the Griffs and Bobcats is slated for noon at the Quinnipiac Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
