Cross Country Puts Together Strong Effort at Jasper XC Fall Invite

Paced by individual champion Tom Appenheimer, the Canisius men's cross country team finished in second place at the Jasper XC Fall Invite, held Saturday morning at Twin Ponds on the Farm in Montgomery, N.Y. In the women's event, Olivia Moran placed fifth overall, helping lead the Canisius women's cross country team to a fifth-place finish as a team.
 
In the race that featured eight MAAC schools on the same site that will host the league's cross country championship race in the end of October,  Appenheimer crossed the finish line in first with his time of 24:33.6, setting a new course record while also beating Tamrat Snyder from Rider (24:35.4). The efforts stands as Appenheimer's best 8K course time in his collegiate career.
 
Canisius senior Ronan McDonald crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 25:17.3, a new personal best time for him on an 8K course, while sophomore Kyle Urban (25:33.9) and senior Max Chew (25:37.1) both placed inside the top-20 at 15th and 17th place, respectively.

The Rider Broncs won the men's race with 43 points, while the Golden Griffins took second with 65 points. Siena took third in the men's race with 68 points, followed by NYU (84 points) and Marist (149).
 
In the women's race, Moran crossed the line with a time of 21:08.8, breaking her previous collegiate personal best time by more than a minute. She was followed by sophomore Kayla Schmidt (21:40.1), who also finished in the top-10 by placing 10th in the field with her collegiate PR of 22:11.3, more than 30 seconds better than her previous career best time.
 
Canisius had a number of PR's on Saturday, with senior Jules Jones placing 22nd with her time of 22:13.0, topping her previous best time of 22:38.7. Sophomore Jacquline Appenheimer improved on her previous best time by more than 15 seconds, while junior Taylor Heschke finished with a time of 23:01.4, also 15 seconds better than her previous career best.
 
As a team, Canisius finished fifth with a total of 108 points, just thee points behind MAAC rivals Rider (105) and Siena (106). Quinnipiac won the women's event with 31 points, followed by second-place NYU (56 points).

Canisius returns to action on Sept. 30 when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., to take part in the Paul Short Run.
