Men’s Soccer Drops MAAC Opener to Manhattan

The Manhattan offense exploded with a flurry of first half goals to take a 4-0 victory over Canisius Saturday afternoon in men's collegiate soccer action in Riverdale, N.Y.

The Jaspers will claim their first win of the season and first MAAC victory to bring their record to 1-3-2, while the Golden Griffins fall to 1-5-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in the MAAC.

Game Recap:

Manhattan was aggressive from the whistle, getting eight shots off in the first 20 minutes of the match. In the 20th minute, Manhattan's ninth shot found the net, with Sebastiano Musu scoring an unassisted goal. In the 29th minute, Ensa Sanneh added an unassisted goal of his own, putting the Jaspers up 2-0. 

Manhattan continued to test the Canisius defense for the rest of the half, as Musu scoring his second goal of the match with an assist from James Cotter. Cotter assisted on Manhattan's final goal and fourth of the half, passing to Ronan O'Brien for the score. 

After the break, the Griffs were able to curtail the Manhattan attack and the game ended with the final score of 4-0.

The Jaspers defense allowed only six shots from the Griffs throughout the match. Sophomore midfielder Daniel Longo led the way, taking two shots on goal for Canisius. Kyle Pollard, Mason Petrucci and Matthew Fisher each put up on-target shots for the Griffs.

Junior goalkeeper Jack Petrie made the start for the Griffs, making eight saves throughout the contest. Manhattan keeper Danny DiMarco made five saves in the winning effort for the Jaspers.

Game Notes:
•Goalkeeper Jack Petrie made a career-high in saves during this match and a season high for all Canisius goalkeepers with eight stops.
Daniel Longo and defender Kevin Villacorta played all 90 minutes for the Griffs in this match.
•Manhattan out shot Canisius 25-6, highlighted by a 12-5 shot-on-goal margin.

Up Next:
Canisius will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when the Blue and Gold travels to play at Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y. Kick-off for the non-conference game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
