Pollard’s Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to Draw with Quinnipiac

Kyle Pollard's late second-half tally propelled Canisius to a 3-3 draw against defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac in men's collegiate soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

In a seesaw affair that saw the Golden Griffins rally from a pair of deficits, Canisius moved to 1-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play while the Bobcats saw their record shift to 2-3-2 and 0-0-1.

GAME RECAP
Quinnipiac opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with Henri Ernst and Tomas Svecula setting up forward Brage Aasen for the early lead.

The Bobcats extended their advantage to 2-0 at the 19:55 mark as an Aasen corner kick found the head of Joao Pinto, who was positioned in the middle of the box.

The Griffs quickly answered in the 26th minute, with freshman Mason Petrucci and sophomore Michael Switala teaming up to find sophomore Tarek El-Zammar for the strike to cut the Bobcat lead in half before the break.

Canisius drew level less than five minutes into the second half as a corner kick from Petrucci deflected to the senior defender Kodie Sarkodie, who equalized the score at the 49:20 mark.

Quinnipiac stole the momentum back to their side once again, with Aasen scoring his second goal of the contest off a deft pass in the box from Erik Langwagen in the 56th minute.

The two teams continued to battle with tough, physical play as the match drew on. Off the bench, Ely Sidibe and Edson Flores provided multiple deep drives into Bobcat territory but were unable to capitalize.

As the end of the game drew near, a terrific display of dribbling from freshman Matthew Fisher brought him to the top of the Quinnipiac box where he crossed to the cutting sophomore Kyle Pollard, who scored his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 3-all.

The Griffs had two corner kicks in the final minute of the game but were unable to take the lead and the game ended in a tie.

Canisius keeper Jack Petrie collected two saves in the contest, while Bobcat keeper Karl Netzell stopped one shot.

Thoughts on the game from head coach Michael Tanke and sophomore midfielder Kyle Pollard
