Women's Soccer Blanks Little Three Rival St. Bonaventure

Box Score Canisius used second-half goals from freshman Nicki Silverman and junior Emma Oliphant to record a 2-0 victory over Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in collegiate women's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo. 
 
The Golden Griffins (2-1-3) dominated their longtime rival offensively, out-shooting the Bonnies (1-2-4) by a 28-3 margin for the contest. Oliphant led the way with eight shot attempts, while Silverman and sophomore Lizzy Harkness finished with four shots apiece.
 
Griffs junior keeper Jordan Spencer extended her shutout streak to five games, recording two saves to pick up her second win of the season.


Canisius' first chance of the contest came just 2:52 into the contest off the foot of junior Madeline Weltin, but it was corralled by Bonnies goaltender Chiara Gottinger.
 
Oliphant registered her first shot attempt in the 12th minute, followed by a great chance in the 18th minute off a cross from sophomore Mia Iacona that would go off the left woodwork.
 
SBU got its first chance of the game in the 28th minute on a shot from Hannah Walker, but it would be turned aside by Spencer for the first of her two saves.
 
Canisius broke the scoreless deadlock at the 49:46 mark, with Silverman scoring her first collegiate goal as she fired a shot into the far left of the net off a pass from Oliphant.
 
Oliphant provided the insurance marker in the 78th minute, collecting a pass from freshman Maggie Cregan and firing it into the far left side of the net
 
St Bonaventure would apply pressure for the first time at the 85 minute mark with a shot from Alessia Donia which would once again be corralled by Spencer.

POSTGAME COMMENTS

GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's game served as the 42nd all-time meeting between the Little Three rivals
• The Griffs extended their unbeaten streak to eight games against the Bonnies with Wednesday's victory (4-0-4)
• Spencer posted the seventh shutout of her career and continued her shutout streak to five games which extends her career best
• Canisius shot the ball 28 times which is the most since August, 21 2015 when they finished with 52 shot attempts in a 16-1 victory over Hampton
• Midfielder Jazmin Herrera and forward Elizabeth Cavanaugh both made their collegiate debuts during Wednesday's contest 
• With Wednesday's victory, Canisius has now recorded five-game shutout streaks in each of the last two seasons

Canisius opens up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Saturday on the road versus St. Peter's. Opening kickoff for the contest between the Griffs and Peacocks is slated for noon at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.
