Fairfield Defeats Men’s Basketball

The visiting Fairfield Stags shot 57.1 percent from the field as a team and made 10-of-20 shots from 3-point land en route to an 88-63 victory over Canisius Monday afternoon in MAAC men's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win, Fairfield's ninth in its last 10 games, improved the Stags to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in conference action.

Canisius junior guard Tre Dinkins score a team-high 17 points and dished out four assists in the loss for the Griffs, who shot 38.2 percent from the field and went 3-of-20 from behind the 3-point arc in the loss. Fellow junior Frank Mitchell added 14 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Cam Palesse chipped in nine points and a career-high seven rebounds.

GAME RECAP
Fairfield, who never led by fewer than three points in the entire game, jumped out to an early 8-0 lead 1:54 into the contest and never looked back. The Stags shot 58.8 percent (20-for-34) from the floor in the first half, with six of those 20 baskets coming from 3-point range. Midway through the opening frame, Canisius trailed 22-13 with 9:04 left to play before scoring five of the game's next seven points to get within six at 24-18 with 8:02 left before intermission. That, however, was as close as the Griffs would get for the remainder of the day, as Fairfield used a 10-0 run over the game's next 2:05 to go up by a score of 34-18. In that run, Fairfield's Jalen Leach scored six of his 14 points on the afternoon.

Leach was one of five Fairfield players scored in double-figures in the victory. The Stags were led by freshman Peyton Smith, who posted 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. Graduate student Caleb Fields chipped in 16 points, highlighted by four 3-point field goals, and senior Louis Bleechmore added 12 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists for the Stags, who ended the day with a season-high 26 assists on 36-made field goals.

HEAD COACH REGGIE WITHERPSPOON'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Offensively, we are having trouble finding any rhythm, and then when it goes bad, right now, it's not like we have a bunch of new guys when can put in to play. Today, Siem [Uijtendaal] couldn't go in the second half because he's hurt, and then [Tre] Dinkins was limping. That puts us in a really tough spot. Right now, we need some other guys to step up."

"There's not a lot to say after a game like this one. We will look at the film and move on to start preparing for the next game."

GAME NOTES
• Monday was the 96th all-time meeting between these two Jesuit rivals, with Fairfield leading the series 55-41.
