Men’s Basketball Tripped Up at Iona

Four Iona players scored in double-figures, and the host Gaels hit 10 3-point field goals en route to a 70-58 victory over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Friday night at the Hynes Athletic Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Canisius junior Frank Mitchell recorded his MAAC-leading eighth double-double of the season after he scored a team-high 13 points to go with a game-high 17 rebounds, 14 of which came off the defensive glass. Junior TJ Gadsden and sophomore Cam Palesse each scored 12 points in the losing cause, while sophomore Devean Williams added 10 points off the bench for the Golden Griffins, who fell to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in MAAC action with the loss.

Idan Tretout and Wheza Panzo led Iona (8-9, 3-3 MAAC) with 14 points, apiece, while Greg Gordon added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Joel Brown chipped in 12 points to the Gaels' winning effort, as Iona ended the night by shooting 41.0 percent from the field, with 10 of the team's 25 makes from the field coming from 3-point land.

GAME RECAP
Midway through the first half, Canisius outscored Iona 9-4 over the span of 3:03 to take a 20-16 lead with 10:03 left before the halftime break. Iona answered that with a 12-2 scoring run of its own that gave the home team a 28-22 lead with just 2:52 left before intermission. A 3-point field goal from junior Tre Dinkins moments later got Canisius within three at 28-25 with 2:00 left in the first half, but Iona went into the locker room up 36-27 after the Gaels scored eight of the final 10 points in the opening stanza.

Out of the halftime break, back-to-back buckets by Mitchell and Palesse got the Griffs within five points at 36-31 just 1:20 into the second half, forcing Iona to take a 30-second timeout. Out of that timeout, Iona used an 8-2 run over the span of 2:21 to push its lead to 44-33 with 16:04 showing on the game clock. In that run, Gordon scored five of the Gaels' eight points, and that scoring spurt gave Iona a double-digit lead that the Gaels would not relinquish the rest of the way.
