Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Can’t Keep Up with Saint Peter’s

Saint Peter's forward Corey Washington scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and the host Peacocks held Canisius to just 22 second-half points, as Saint Peter's posted a 70-59 win over the Golden Griffins in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

The win moved Saint Peter's to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in MAAC play, while Canisius slipped to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in league play with its third-straight loss.

Three Canisius players scored in double figures in the losing effort, led by sophomore Devean Williams, who posted a career-high 15 points off the bench. Junior Tre Dinkins added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, and senior Bryce Okpoh chipped in 10 points off the bench. Junior Frank Mitchell scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, as the Griffs ended the contest with a 43-34 advantage on the glass.

Washington scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the game's first half, and he also ended the contest with two steals. Brent Bland added 19 points to the winning cause, while Latrell Reid was good for 12 points and eight assists, as the Peacocks won the game after shooting 42.1 percent from the field, 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from 3-point land and 70.0 percent from the free-throw line.

GAME RECAP
Midway through the first half, Saint Peter's used a 12-2 run over the span of 3:27 to take a 24-12 advantage over Canisius with 10:08 left before halftime. Canisius battled back, however, and eventually tied the game at 31-31 with 3:48 left before intermission on the power of back-to-back 3-pointers from Dinkins. A pair of free-throws by Okpoh and a lay-up by Mitchell in the final 1:06 of the opening stanza sent the Blue and Gold into the locker room up one at 37-36.

Out of the halftime break, the Peacocks pulled away from the Griffs thanks to a 15-5 run over the first 7:14 of the second half, a scoring spurt that put the Peacocks up 51-41 with 12:46 left on the clock. In that run, Washington and Bland combined for 10 of the Peacock's 15 points. The Griffs were able to whittle Saint Peter's cushion down to five points at 53-48 with 7:55 after an Okpoh make at the free-throw line, but the Peacocks answered by scoring five of the game's next six points over a span of 1:34 to take a 58-49 advantage with 5:22 left to play.

Canisius shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the field in the loss and made 6-of-16 shots from behind the 3-point arc in the loss. The Griffs also turned the ball over 17 times, which Saint Peter's was able to turn into 16 points.
