Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Team Effort Leads Men’s Basketball to Win Over Manhattan

Four of Canisius' starting five scored in double-figures, led by junior Frank Mitchell and his career-high 21 points, as the Golden Griffins ended a three-game losing skid with an 82-70 win over Manhattan Friday night in MAAC men's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win improved Canisius to 8-11 overall and 3-6 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers fell to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in league action with their 10th consecutive loss.

The win served as career victory No. 300 for head coach Reggie Witherspoon. Witherspoon also became the school's all-time winningest coach in MAAC regular season games with the victory, passing former Canisius head coach Mike MacDonald.

Mitchell added a game-high 15 rebounds to his 21-point effort on Friday for his MAAC-leading ninth double-double of the season. He also earned two assists and a blocked shot in the win, Canisius' first since the team defeated Siena at home Jan. 15. Senior Siem Uijtendaal and junior Tre Dinkins each scored 18 points in the victory, and Dinkins matched a career-high with eight assists as well, as the Griffs ended the night with 21 assists on 33-made field goals. Junior TJ Gadsden chipped in 12 points in the win for Canisius, which shot 53.2 percent from the field for the game and outscored Manhattan 16-11 in fastbreak points.

Manhattan freshman Seydou Traore had a team-high 17 points in the loss for Manhattan, which shot 45 percent from the field, made 6-of-18 shots from 3-point land and hit on 10-of-11 chances from the free-throw line. Traore also grabbed a team best seven rebounds in the loss, as Canisius ended the night with a 40-24 advantage on the glass.

GAME RECAP
Canisius and Manhattan were knotted at 41-41 at halftime after both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field in the opening 20:00 of play. Gadsden's bucket 23 seconds into the second half started a 6-0 run for the home team and gave the Blue and Gold a 43-41 lead, a lead the team would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. A traditional 3-point play by Manhattan's Jaden Winston with 16:48 left on the clock got the Jaspers within one at 50-49, but Canisius pulled away for good moments later, using a 9-0 over the span of the next 2:03 to make the score 59-49 in favor of the Griffs.

Midway through the second half, a 3-pointer by Uijtendaal gave Canisius a 70-53 lead, its largest lead in a game since the Griffs were up by 30 points on Quinnipiac back on Dec. 1. A driving lay-up by Manhattan's Logan Padgett with 4:05 remaining cut the Canisius lead to nine at 76-67, but the Griffs answered with the game's next four points to seal the win, highlighted by an alleyoop-dunk from Mitchell off a pass from Dinkins.

GAME NOTES
• Friday marked the 100th all-time meeting in this series' history, which dates back to the 1908-09 season. Manhattan leads the series 58-42.
• Canisius' 82 points are the most for the Blue and Gold in a game since the team scored 87 points in a win over Robert Morris on Dec. 6.
• Canisius improved to 5-0 in games this season when posting 80-or more points on the scoreboard.
• The 53.2 percent effort from the field marks the Griffs' best shooting performance in a game since the Blue and Gold shot 54.5 percent from the floor in a home win over D'Youville Nov. 20.
• As a team, Canisius had 11 offensive rebounds in the win, the 13th time this season where the Griffs have grabbed 10-or more offensive rebounds in a game.
• Mitchell has now recorded 15-or more rebounds in three-straight games and in five contests this season. He is the first Griff to have five-or more games with 15-plus boards in a single season since Darren Fenn did it five times in 1999-00.
• Dinkins, who entered the game as the only player in the MAAC to rank in the top-five of the league in both scoring average and assists per game average, has now had eight assists in three different games this year, with the most recent occasion coming Dec. 6 against Robert Morris.
