Before a capacity crowd of 2,196 fans, Canisius defeated Mount St. Mary's, 62-49, on Independent Health Kid's Day during Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Junior Athina Lexa chipped in nine points for the Blue and Gold while senior Mackenzie Amalia dished out a team-leading five assists in the winning effort.

Isabella Hunt tallied her own double-double for the Mountaineers (3-9, 0-3 MAAC) with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Jada Lee notched 17 points. Giana Hoddinott totaled a game-high two steals in the losing effort.

Down at 17-9 at the start of the second quarter, the Griffs offense took off in the second stanza with an 11-2 run across the first 4:32 of the frame to take their first lead of the game, 20-19, with 5:31 to play.

Canisius continued to click on the offensive end as it ended the frame with a 10-0 spurt across the final 3:41 to enter the locker room ahead, 34-26.

The Mount attempted to cut into the Griffs lead at the beginning of the third quarter, but an 8-0 spurt in the middle part of the frame, capped by an Eleko layup, would see Canisius extend its lead to 46-33 with 2:06 to play.

Mount St. Mary's continued to chip away, using two late layups in the third quarter to start a 12-4 sequence to get them to within five, 50-45, with 5:14 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Blue and Gold stymied the Mount comeback effort on their next trip down the floor as a Lexa layup ignited a game-sealing 12-4 run for the Griffs that spanned the rest of the game to secure the victory.
