Four-Goal Third Sparks Hockey to Victory Versus St. Lawrence

Canisius scored four goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and defeat St. Lawrence, 5-1, in men's collegiate ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Senior captain Max Kouznetsov tallied the eventual game-winning goal to open the third-period barrage for the Golden Griffins (6-11-3) while freshman Matteo Giampa, sophomore Robert Kincaid and junior Matt Vermaeten added insurance markers to seal the victory.

Senior Cody Schiavon recorded the opening goal for Canisius while freshman goaltender Ethan Robertson made 28 saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Blue and Gold.

Mason Waite tallied the lone goal for the visiting Saints (5-11-1) while Ben Kraws finished with 37 stops in goal for SLU.

Tied 1-1 at the start of the third period, Kouznetsov gave Canisius the lead at the 6:10 mark of the frame, depositing a rebound off a shot from graduate student Erik Urbank over the blocker of Kraws for his fifth goal of the season.
Giampa provided some breathing room during 4-on-4 action with under three minutes to play in regulation, creating a turnover deep the SLU zone before firing a wrist shot over the glove of Kraws for his team-leading 13th goal of the campaign to expand the Canisius lead to 3-1. Kincaid and Vermaeten capped the Canisius' third-period salvo with a pair of empty-net tallies just over a minute apart to determine the four-goal margin of victory. Earlier in the contest, Waite staked SLU to a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 6:19 into the second period, sneaking a shot under the right arm of Robertson from the right face-off circle for his second of the campaign.

Schiavon brought the Griffs level with less than two minutes to play in the middle period, placing sophomore Killian Kiecker-Olson's centering feed over the glove of Kraws from the middle of the slot for his third of the campaign, setting the stage for Canisius' third-period outburst.
