Loughran’s Last-Second Tally Earns Hockey Tie Versus Bentley

Senior Griffin Loughran and freshman Trey Funk each tallied a goal and an assist while senior goaltender David Fessenden made 39 saves to pace Canisius in a 2-2 tie versus Bentley in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Fessenden also picked up his second career assist with the secondary helper on Funk's second-period goal for the Golden Griffins (9-17-4, 8-10-4 AHA).

Nick Bochen and Matt Thomson scored for Bentley (15-16-1, 11-12-1 AHA), who won the best-of-three shootout, 2-0, to earn the extra point. Nicholas Grabko made 24 saves in goal for the visitors.

Trailing 2-1 in the dying seconds of the third period, Loughran forced overtime with a buzzer-beating goal as he collected a loose puck just above the goal line to the right of the Bentley goal and flipped it under the left arm Grabko with 0.2 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Following a scoreless overtime session, the game headed to a shootout, where Thomson and Ryan Mansfield scored to give the Falcons the extra point.

Earlier in the contest, Funk opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the second period, collecting a feed from Loughran as he entered the Bentley zone before firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Grabko for his fourth goal of the season.
Bochen brought the Falcons level at the eight-minute mark of the middle frame, one-timing a cross-ice feed from Arlo Merritt over the glove of Fessenden from the left face-off circle to tie the game at 1-1.

Thomson gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead 3:30 into the third period, collecting his own rebound and putting the puck over the glove of Fessenden from the middle of the slot, setting the stage for Loughran's late-game heroics.
