Quick Start Sparks Hockey to Victory at Robert Morris

Canisius took advantage of goals from five different players and 36 saves from senior David Fessenden to record a 5-3 victory over Robert Morris in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Clearview Arena in Moon Township, Pa.

Seniors Kyle Haskins and Brenden Datema, sophomore Oliver Tarr and freshmen Trey Funk and Matteo Giampa all scored goals for the Golden Griffins (10-17-4, 9-10-4 AHA). Senior Griffin Loughran dished out a pair of assists while Haskins, Giampa and Tarr all added single helpers to finish with two-point nights.

Jackson Reineke, Rylee St. Onge and Cameron Garvey all scored for the Colonials (10-20-3, 7-14-2 AHA). Francis Boisvert recorded 24 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Canisius scored three times in the opening 13 minutes of the contest to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Funk got the Griffs on the board at the 5:49 mark of the first when he tapped home is own rebound while on the rush for his fifth goal of the season.
Giampa doubled the Canisius cushion less than two minutes later, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Loughran by roofing the puck over an outstretched Boisvert for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Haskins capped Canisius' early barrage just before the 13-minute mark, depositing a loose puck under the blocker of Boisvert from the bottom of the slot for his third of the season. Reineke got the Colonials on the board with a power-play goal less than two minutes after Haskins marker, sneaking the puck past Fessenden and inside the right post just off the goal line to trim the Canisius advantage to 3-1.

Datema restored the Griffs three-goal margin with 6:42 elapsed in the middle period, working his way from the left point into the slot before firing a shot over the glove of Boisvert to make it a 4-1 game.
St. Onge pulled the Colonials within two with less than four minutes to play in the middle frame, depositing a goalmouth feed from Reineke into the Canisius goal to cut the RMU deficit to 4-2.

Tarr provided the Griffs with their third three-goal lead of the contest early in the third period when he put home a loose puck after his pass attempt was knocked down by a RMU defender.
Garvey gave the Colonials life in the 8:03 mark of the third, putting a backhanded effort over the glove of Fessenden from close range to pull RMU within two, 5-3.

That would be as close as RMU would get, as Fessenden and Canisius held them the Colonials the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the two-goal victory.
